According to experts, Pune-Nashik rail connectivity has tremendous potential to drive the exponential growth of the triangular region — Mumbai-Pune-Nashik-Mumbai. "Pune and Nashik have already become the counter magnet to Mumbai as skyrocketing real estate prices in the metropolis are becoming a deterrent to the growth of business and industry," said Subodh Jain, former top official of Central Railway. The proposed alignment of this project will pass through the talukas of Flaveli, Khed, Arnbegaon and Junnar tehsils of Pune district, Sangamner tehsil of Ahmednagar district and Sinner and Nashik tehsils of Nashik district

"Keeping business development of the area in mind, private freight terminals (PFTs) are planned at major stations such as Chakan, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata and Sangamner. Also, loading and unloading facilities are planned at various stations; said another official of MRIDC, adding that this proposed rail line will also augment the revenues from industries such as automobile, electronics, pharmaceuticals, sugar mills and agricultural activities in and around the project influence areas. Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, managing director, MahaRail who has authored a book 'Construction and Maintenance of High-Speed Railway' and has expertise on high-speed trains, said, "This project will be a role model for development of new railway line networks in Maharashtra. This project is unique because it is the first broad-gauge semi-high-speed rail line in India. It is designed in such a way that goods trains, conventional passenger trains as well as high-speed trains can run on the same route." The cost of the project has been pegged at Rs 16,039 crore, including taxes, on 60:40 basis, wherein Maharashtra government and ministry of railway shall contribute equity of 20% each of the project cost. The remaining 60% will be raised from the domestic financial institutions.
